Clay Street Unit Portland Concert reviews
Tired? Off night?
In September 2026, I saw an amazing show by the Clay Street Unit at Seattle's McCaw Hall. Their Nov. 5 show at the Paramount Theater, however, seemed like an off night. They had done another show at the Paramount the night before, and they have been on the road a lot in the last year or so. Sometimes they seemed a little tired or out of focus. Some songs, like "Get What You Deserve," Ray Charles's "Let's Go Get Stoned," and B.B. King's "How Blue Can You Get?" came across strongly. However, most of the rest felt off in some way -- there were technical problems, gaps, and dead spots. They played very few of their own best songs. Derek Trucks seemed to use every song as an opportunity to show off how long and fast he can play his guitar. Rather than sticking to their blues roots, TTB appears to be aiming to become a blues-rock-jazz-fusion band. While they have an amazing range and can play anything, a more limited focus might suit them better. They did play for three hours, providing value for the money. I would consider seeing them again, but I would hope for a better show.
